A reality we cannot turn away from

In Colombia, over 230,000 students left the education system in 2022 (MEN). In Cauca, the struggle is even harsher: many families live in rural areas marked by distance, poverty, and lack of infrastructure. These barriers push the secondary school dropout rate to 4.8% — well above the national average of 3.6%.

In Corinto, a town of about 22,800 people, school dropout is a painful reality. One of our greatest challenges is to make sure that children and young people from rural and vulnerable communities not only reach school but are able to stay and thrive there.
Behind this problem lie many causes. Poverty, the absence of school transport, the lack of academic and emotional guidance, and the scarcity of basic supplies weigh heavily. But there are also deeper wounds: the shadow of drug trafficking, the presence of illegal armed groups, and the violence that tears at the heart of families and communities

Every year, dozens of young people aged 12 to 18 leave school behind. That’s 10% of students in this stage of life — around 120 to 150 boys and girls whose school year is lost.
👉 Every student who abandons their studies is a cut-off talent, a postponed dream, and a future that drifts away from opportunities.

What we do at the Fundación Mariana Hoyos de Gutiérrez

At the Fundación Mariana Hoyos de Gutiérrez, we rise to these challenges, bringing real opportunities for education to those who need them most. From supporting schools directly to awarding university scholarships, we fight to ensure that education is not a privilege, but a right. That’s why it is urgent to join hands. Because when you support, a child stays in school. A young person graduates. A family regains its hope. Education cannot wait.

Together, we can change this story — and bring hope back to hundreds of families:

University scholarships, in partnership with institutions like Universidad del Valle, Universidad del Cauca, and Universidad Icesi, open the doors of higher education to young people from Corinto — giving them the chance to dream bigger and build a brighter future

Vocational guidance that helps students uncover their talents, nurture their potential, and take the first steps toward building their future.

Educational fairs that carry academic and training opportunities into rural communities, opening doors that once felt out of reach.

Psychosocial and emotional support, because we understand that true learning begins when students feel cared for and accompanied.

"We continue to stand in Corinto, where education is still not a guaranteed right for all. In spite of the barriers, the Mariana Hoyos de Gutiérrez Foundation does everything possible to walk alongside children and young people who deserve to learn with dignity and with real opportunities for their future”. Andrés Pereira - Coordinator of Social and economic Project"

The challenge remains enormous

In Corinto, hundreds of young people still face barriers — from lack of access and scarce resources to the weight of living in rural, Indigenous, and Afro-Colombian communities (44% Nasa, 28% Afro-Colombian). Educational exclusion is not always seen, but its scars run deep: dreams interrupted, talents left behind, futures put on hold. The Mariana Hoyos de Gutiérrez Foundation keeps moving forward with unwavering commitment, making sure education reaches the places where it is needed the most.
